Kick-Off Your Summer With Jarrod’s Hard Cherry Lemonade

If there’s one thing that signals the start of summer in Australia, it’s punnets of ripe and juicy cherries hitting our shelves. Cherry season only lasts around 100 days in Australia, from November to late summer, so if you ever needed a sign to experiment with cherries in your cocktails, now’s the time!

Jarrod @diycocktailguy is our go-to aficionado for whipping up easy-to-make drinks at home, and with his latest cocktail recipe, he’s showing you how to make the most of cherry season beyond pavlovas and pies. “The raspberry vodka complements the cherry element so well; so if you love cherries, you’re going to love this one,” Jarrod says.

Here’s everything you need to make this new summer staple at home. The cherry on top? It’s easy to make, easy to drink, and easy to serve up for two or for twenty people, depending on the occasion.

How to make Hard Cherry Lemonade

Method:

  1. Add ½ cup of pitted cherries to your blender along with 15mL of simple syrup and then blend away.
  2. Grab your cocktail shaker and pour 90mL of the Smirnoff Raspberry Crush Vodka. Remember, this recipe serves 2, so multiply the quantities if you’re whipping up a round for everyone.
  3. Add 30mL of freshly squeezed lime juice into the cocktail shaker.
  4. Then, pour 60mL of the cherry juice that you blended back in step 1 to your cocktail shaker and shake thoroughly.
  5. Add ice to your lowball glasses and evenly divide the cocktail mixture between the two before topping up each glass with your lemonade.
  6. Add a maraschino cherry or two to each glass for the cherry on top of this delicious summer cocktail.

Hard lemonade — our drink pick for the summer!

It’s no wonder why hard lemonade is a summer staple. Delightfully juicy, fruity, and bursting with sweetness, it’s the perfect pick for your next weekend BBQ, pre-drinks before you hit a music festival or pitcher of cocktail to take to a picnic. The concept of hard lemonade is by no means new either. Bright and colourful cocktails like the Fruit Tingle and Blue Lagoon are two juicy old-school favourites that bring together vodka, lemonade and blue curacao for a fun and fruity cocktail. And if you’re not up for mixing your own, pick a pack of the Smirnoff Ice Lavender Lemonade or the Pimms Long Lemonade Cans for a quick and easy alternative to seltzers, beers or ciders.

The meteoric rise of ‘hard’ drinks — fizzy fad or here to stay?

Hard seltzers have undoubtedly had their moment in the sun over the last couple of years. Sparkling water, a hint of natural flavour and a dash of alcohol to bring the ‘hard’ element, all combine for a refreshingly light (and often lower in sugar) alternative to other ready-to-drink premix alternatives or summer staples like beer or cider. Some thought the seltzer wave would come and go, but its rising popularity has proved that it’s found its rightful place in the market. And now, hard lemonade is hot on its heels. From Jarrod’s sweet and rich cherry version, to our Barbie-themed pink lemonade recipe, your summer of hard lemonade is sorted. Plus, mixing up your own from scratch means you can dial the ‘hard’ element up or down as much as you please, or remove it altogether for a non-alcoholic version for the sober curious in the room. Just pick the ripe fruit of the season and blend away!
