Everyone loves a margarita right now – it’s been named the world’s number one cocktail – so your guests are sure to love being handed a salt-rimmed tumbler of tangy tequila cocktail to sip on. Speaking of tequila, why have one when you can double it up? Twisting the rules and playing with flavours is all part of the fun of making big-batch cocktails.

How to make a Margarita Punch

Ingredients (Serves 12)

  • Ice cubes, to serve
  • 250mL El Sueño Watermelon Liqueur
  • 250mL Espolon Tequila Reposado
  • 120mL Cointreau liqueur
  • 750mL btl Grant Burge Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV
  • 750mL lime-flavoured sparkling water
  • 125mL lime juice
  • Lime slices, to serve
  • Lime wedge, to serve
  • Salt, to serve

Method

  1. Fill a serving jug or punch bowl with ice. Add the watermelon liqueur, tequila and Cointreau and stir to combine.
  2. Pour in the sparkling wine, sparkling water and lime juice and stir to combine. Add some lime slices.
  3. Spread salt over a plate. Run the cut side of the lime wedge around the rim of short tumbler glasses (this helps the salt stick). Dip the rim of each glass in salt to coat. Serve the punch in the prepared glasses and garnish with lime slices.

Prep ahead with a big-batch margarita punch

Sure you could take any tequila and margarita-flavoured mixers and make a punch, but we’re talking about taking the flavours to the next level, and that calls for a tequila less ordinary. Enter El Sueño Watermelon Liqueur. Its base spirit is El Sueño Silver, a premium 100% blue agave tequila with a reputation for making great margaritas, but it’s the natural summer fruit flavours of watermelon and citrus that make it a standout for the party season. To dial up the tequila flavour even more, we’ve used Espolon Tequila Reposado. Aged for 2 years in oak barrels, it’s a medal-winning Mexican craft tequila.

Bringing the fizz to any punch you make is a breeze with Grant Burge Pinot Noir Chardonnay. Bottle-fermented by the Champagne method, it’s an easy-drinking and great-value Aussie sparkling wine.
