The GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers Countdown is just around the corner and we’re counting down the minutes until the most popular craft brews of the past year, as voted by you, are revealed.
GABS, short for Great Australian Beer Spec-TAP-ular, have been giving Aussies the lowdown on the who’s who in craft beer since 2008. They shine a spotlight on the passion that goes into the craft — from both the brewers and the diehard drinkers. Each year, we join them in celebrating the big winners in craft beer and here’s how you can get amongst it.

If there’s one thing Aussies love, it’s a countdown. Whether it’s the biggest music hits of the past year or the latest in craft beer — if there’s a countdown — we’ll be there.
For over a decade, craft beer aficionados have been voting online for their favourite hops of the year in the GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers Countdown. Previous winners include heavyweights like Balter XPA, Bentspoke Craftshank IPA and most recently, the Mountain Culture Status Quo Pale Ale — just to name a few.
The countdown celebrates new brews on the block, as well as champions who have well and truly earned their place in the craft beer hall of fame. As the top beers are unveiled, winners can go from being a cult favourite to a certified big name overnight.
But what makes beer, ‘craft beer’?
Typically, craft beer is brewed by an independently-owned brewery that produces beer on a smaller scale. When production is based around small batches like it is in craft breweries, craftsmanship and experimentation become a big focus and point of difference. They’re not afraid to push the boundaries with flavour profiles or styles, and you’ll usually see limited edition or seasonal releases hitting the shelves. Often, you’ll be able to tour the brewery, grab a tasting paddle and a bite to eat and enjoy live music in a craft brewery too. From the haunted Thunder Road Brewery in Brunswick VIC to the ever popular Little Creatures and Gage Roads Brew Co in Fremantle WA, Australia is not short on unique craft breweries, so get out there and explore!
