@DIYCocktailGuy has a special guest with him to make the Cane Toad cocktail inspired by the QLD Maroons mascot!
From Collingwood vs. Carlton, the Ashes, Broncos vs. Cowboys and the Bledisloe Cup, we’re not short on sporting rivalries in Australia. But if there’s one fiercely contested match-up that stops the nation each year, it’s the Origins series.
We’re taking the Origin contest off the pitch and into the kitchen with a shake-off over the best Cane Toad Cocktail. “We’re making a delicious Cane Toad cocktail in honour of the Origin series coming up,” Jarrod @diycocktailguy says.
Fruity, refreshing and ready to pack a punch, the Cane Toad is the perfect cocktail to mix together with your mates as you get comfortable on the couch for Game I. Take a cue out of Jarrod and Liam’s book and turn it into a friendly competition with the loser sporting opposition colours or shouting everyone takeaway pizzas for the night.
Along with your team scarf and jersey, here’s what else you’ll need to grab in time for celebrating Game I in style.
Cocktail ingredients:
30mL of Flecha Azul Blanco Tequila
30mL of Pure Origin Tasmanian Vodka
15mL of St Remy Authentic VSOP Brandy
30mL of fresh lime juice
30mL of raspberry cordial
Soda water
Fresh raspberries
Dehydrated lime wheels
Method:
For those of you south of the Queensland border, you might not be as well acquainted with the Maroons mascot — the cane toad. Although it’s long been considered a pest, this iconic Queensland amphibian has since been celebrated in cocktail form. Typically, a Cane Toad Cocktail includes tequila, vodka, cherry brandy and soda water, finished off with a swizzle stick (similar to a toothpick). But bar hop around Brisbane and you might find versions with dark rum, banana and pineapple too.
Clover Club
If you’re a fan of the raspberry flavours in the Cane Toad Cocktail, give a Clover Club a go. Instead of tequila and vodka, a Clover Club is for all the gin lovers. The lemon juice, raspberry syrup and egg whites give it a refreshing and fruity taste, plus its deep red hue matches perfectly with your Maroons jersey.
Raspberry Mule
A fruity and fun variation of a classic Moscow Mule, the Raspberry Mule features raspberry vodka, fresh raspberries and Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Its deep, red colour and nod to Bundaberg makes it a refreshing option for both vodka drinkers and Maroons fans come Game I.
Cloudy Tinnie
Speaking of Bundaberg, this Cloudy Tinnie recipe from Jarrod brings together a thirst-quenching pale ale, ginger beer and Bundaberg Rum for the ultimate game day drink that shows your Maroons support.
XXXX
If you’re not in the mood for a cocktail, nothing says Maroons pride quite like a can of XXXX. Golden and refreshing, it’s the perfect pairing with hot wings too. This is one beer to add to your game-day line-up!
